It is a cyclic heptapeptide cyclized via a lactam bridge between Asp and Lys residues. This cyclic structure confers significantly greater metabolic stability compared to linear α-MSH analogs. Bremelanotide acts as a non-selective agonist of the melanocortin receptors, primarily MC3R and MC4R, present in the central nervous system. These receptor subtypes are most highly expressed in the hypothalamus and limbic system.
